I have to break-up some of my Lost and 24 as, though I do enjoy writing them, they aren’t a specialty by any means.
In the past few weeks, we’ve seen new trailers for just about every summer movie coming when the sun finally sticks around for more than a few days. With Watchmen coming to theaters Friday, it’s safe to say we can actually start going to the movies again as dumping season comes to a close….
Funny People
Starring: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Eric Bana, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill
It’s really tough to judge where writer/director Judd Apatow (Every comedy you’ve seen in the past few years) is going with this. Clearly, it’s intended for a more mature audience than those who have gone to see his movies for a bunch of penis jokes and were turned off by, gasp, actual emotion. But with this really long 3 1/2 minute trailer, it’s not particularly funny (OK, I loved the Die Hard and Deer Hunter jokes) and it’s a bit scattershot with the emotions. It almost feels like this could be a James L. Brooks film. But I must point out, trailer’s for Apatow’s other two films weren’t exactly engaging either and turned out to be big surprises. So, here’s hoping the same for this. (Opens July 31)
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Starring: Shia Lebouf, Megan Fox, Rainn Wilson, Tyrese Gibson
It’s just a teaser, but I’m not sold. Transformers was great in theaters the first time. Subsequent viewings, it’s a tough thing to sit through. Cheesy characters, thin plot, really long running time – it’s like Independence Day without the benefit of nostalgia. This is all fireworks, which is fine. But if its another 2 1/2 hours of thin plot, I’ll give it a pass. (Opens June 24)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Liev Shreiber, Ryan Reynolds
Once again, the last installment was a ridiculous letdown from the previous two X-Men chapters. This has a few things working for it including a great cast and good story. But this, like the Transformers trailer, is a lot of bang without the promise of an engaging movie. I’m really hoping I’m wrong as we started the summer off wrong with Indiana Jones 4 last year, we don’t need to sully an already-stained franchise again. (Opens May 1)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Marlon Wayans, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller
This movie looks like CGI trash. I, like any other male born in the ’80s, love G.I. Joe. But it only takes the director of Van Helsing to turn an easily-adaptable secret military story and turn into The Matrix: 2009. (Opens August 7)
Observe and Report
Starring: Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Ray Liotta
It looks like Mr. Rogen will be flexing his dramatic muscle twice this year. In an exact opposite direction of Paul Blart: Mall Cop’s tomfoolery, director Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way) gives an R-Rated, very, very dark comedy about mall security. It’s hard to tell how the film plans to balance its sinister side with laughs (Pineapple Express suffered from the same problem), but it will be a feat if it can be pulled off.
