The Essence of College Party

So I went to a party over the weekend at Ohio State University, something I had never done while at Kent State University. There were alot of things learned.

First, OSU parties are alot bigger than any put on at Kent.

Second, it had just as terrible music at any “bro” party (and this was a mainly “bro” party) except it was hip-hop “bro” music not your typical O.A.R./Jack Johnson-type stuff. So, yes, lots of Plies, Flo Rida and any one of the million songs featuring T-Pain.

Third, in Kent the police patrol the area like a few dozen prison convicts escaped and went to any place people are having fun. At OSU, it wasn’t as bad – at least not where we were at.

But it was fun, people socialized alot more because the party’s are so big, you either talk to strangers or stay in your little corner and stare at the ground.

And it did have the typical terrible singing as captured by me in the video above.

Which leads me to this week’s mix.

Andrew Gaug’s “Get Your Party Right for the Summer Mix”

Snoop Dogg /f/ Too Short and Mister F.A.B. “Life of Da Party” – Now understand making fun of bad rappers is kind of hypocritical seeing as most of these songs aren’t exactly artistic masterpieces. But if this doesn’t get the party going, it’s over. This is Snoop’s second single off of “Ego Trippin’” and it’s not getting as much play as deserved. But it’s a supercatchy song and would be terrible if it got overlooked.

Nelly /f/ Fergie “Party People” I can almost guarantee you will hear this song everywhere this Summer. One – it has the word “party” in it. Two – it has a great beat. Three – It’s a hot song even though it’s cheesy as all get-out.

M.I.A. “Bucky Done Gun” This is an older song, and by that I mean it came out in 2004, but it’s also criminally overlooked. Granted, it’s repetitive but the beat is just out of this world. Plus M.I.A. always makes really weird, good dance music.

N.E.R.D. “Everyone Nose” What better song to keep a party going than a song about girls doing cocaine? Once again – hot beat, catchy, repetitive, good to see Pharrell back with N.E.R.D. than his terrible solo stuff.

Robyn “Cobrastyle” Remember Robyn who sang “Show Me Love” and “Do You Really Want Me?” back in the mid-’90s? They were really corn-ball, cheesy Swedish pop songs that fit right alongside La Bouche and Ace of Base. Well, she’s back and is still kind of cheesy but alot more dirty and fun. This song serves as an example.

Mark Ronson /f/ Amy Winehouse “Valerie” Sometimes you have to mix it up and what better way than a ’60s throwback song from Amy Winehouse. This Zutons cover is a crazy doo-wop type deal and may clear those looking for more dancing. But still, it’ll keep the party going.

Cobra Starship “Guilty Pleasure” On a more rock note, Cobra Starship is the definition of a guilty pleasure. They’re really, really cheesy but more fun than just about rock group out right now. This song pretty much sums them up.

Aquabats “Pool Party” Keeping on the rock side, this is the epitome of a great summer song. If this doesn’t make you want to throw a pool party. I’m not sure what will.

Rihanna “Sell Me Candy” Another guilty pleasure. Since it won’t be a single off, it deserves to be noticed as its a really hot beat by Timbaland proving he has that Midas touch for Summer hits.

Lil’ Wayne “Lollipop (Remix)” – I’m not a huge Lil’ Wayne fan nor am I fan of the original “Lollipop” as it sounds like a song 50 Cent thought was too cheesy to write. But I am a sucker for a whole lot of vocoder effects and this takes the original and makes Lil’ Wayne sound even more robotic. The song is crude and degrading but I can’t deny its ability to keep a party going.

Justice “DVNO” The other great French techno duo that isn’t Daft Punk created a great video and song with “D.A.N.C.E.” and now they’ve got “DVNO.” Might be too Euro-dance for most parties, but if you’re adventurous, this is the song.

So there you go. That’s just a few songs that you can use a pointers to get alot of drunk people swaying and singing along. Yes, there’s no Usher’s “Love in This Club” or anything with T-Pain but by now you should be sick of both. So after you’re done with Finals, have some fun with these.
